The History Of Hummer Thursday, Aug 14 2008

Hummer was originally developed in 1979 in response to the Army’s need for the development of a high mobility multi-purpose wheeled vehicle. In the race to create such a vehicle was Teledyne, Chrysler defense and AM General; it is AM General who succeeded the competition and created what is now known as the Hummer.

Eleven months after it’s initial design AM General’s Hummer design was being tested in the Nevada desert. The Hummers design had to fit a stringent set of requirements for the army, it had to have light amour, deep water fording capability, and Arctic and desert operational ability to name just a few. In January 1985 Hummer produced it first fully equipped and ready for action vehicle. The Hummer became famed for its role during the American Army’s Operation Desert Storm Operation in the Gulf War; and has continued to be used during combat ever since.

It was in 1992 that AM General began producing the Hummer for civilian use, rumor has it that this was in response from Arnold Schwarzenegger who saw a platoon of the vehicles during the filming of Kindergarten Cop. H1, the first civilian model, retained many of the original features of the Hummer minus the combat machinery, this lead to the vehicles great popularity amongst those seeking the ultimate in toughness and mobility.

In 1999 Hummer sales slowed significantly and AM General went into partnership with GM Motors to jointly pursue product, marketing and distribution opportunities for Hummer; in doing so GM secured the exclusive ownership of the Hummer brand meaning securing the company with the rights to use the Hummer brand on any future vehicles, although AM General still reserve the right to build the H1. General Motors wasted no time and set about developing the H2 model based on GM’s Tahoe vehicle.

Now 20 years old, the Hummer is still humming along and is now available in a variety of models.

Hummer Only Brand For Sale Monday, Jul 21 2008

Critics have contended for years that General Motors has far too many brands and have urged the auto giant to dump Buick, Pontiac, GMC, or Saturn—or all of the above—and focus on satisfying customers with its core nameplates: Chevrolet and Cadillac.

With its stock trading at historic lows, GM is responding—but by putting only one brand up for potential sale, despite media reports that more are under review—basically because it could no longer afford to finance the future product development required to keep the nameplate vibrant for customers and dealers in the years to come. Hummer is for sale because GM already has more than enough truck brands, says Mark LaNeve, GM vice president for sales, service, and marketing.

LaNeve frankly admits the intense pressure on the full-size trucks and SUVs created by rising gasoline prices led to the review. “We’ve been looking at the Hummer business obviously for a while. Basically what triggered it is the pressure that we have right now on our full-size trucks. Any body-on-frame trucks are under pressure right now,” he says, noting the automaker has four truck brands with Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, and Hummer.

“It’s only prudent to explore our options with our lowest-volume franchise and one that’s a self-contained brand,” LaNeve says, given that the two segments in which Hummers compete have seen sales fall 50 percent in the past year. “Hummer’s actually gained share,” he says, “but we have a responsibility to look at this business both for our shareholders and for our dealers.”

Dealers are urging GM to move ahead quickly with its review, LaNeve says, and GM, which has retained Citibank as an adviser to help sort through any offers for the Hummer name, will do its best to accommodate their request.

“We think the brand has a lot of potential with the right (product) portfolio and the right investment,” he says. “In terms of our strategic options, it wouldn’t be right for me to speculate and I don’t have anything to speculate about. We’re looking at everything from a complete re-tool of the lineup to a partnership to a partial or complete sale.”

Hummer H3 converted into super-sized remote control car Saturday, May 17 2008

Now here’s an interesting new direction for remote-controlled toys. British engineer Dr James Brighton has transformed the HUMMER H3 into a super-sized remote controlled vehicle to create the ultimate boy’s toy. It took a month to do, but the results have been sensational with exceptional handling, much better than anything remote controlled until now. At UKP26,500 for the Hummer, it’s probably the most expensive remote controlled civilian project in the world too.

“The results are clear – all controllers will be amazed by the handling ability – the best any radio controlled vehicle has had to date. The vehicle is capable of climbing a 407mm vertical wall, traversing a 40% side slope and operating in up to 610mm of water – imagine the fun,” said Brighton.

It’s not really all that suprising that the HUMMER is a great-handling remote-controlled toy – with permanent full-time four-wheel drive, a two-ratio transfer gearbox, traction control and HUMMER’s patented StabiliTrack Stability Enhancement System on all models, the H3 is as sure-footed as they come.
